RPG Buffet 17 (Lord of the Rings Role Playing Game) (20:28)

Mags, Louis, and Kae of the RPG Buffet gather over skype to talk about their playing of Decipher's Lord of the Rings RPG.

Since we were playing Lord of the Rings, we decided it was time to eat like hobbits. Any fan of the series will tell you that hobbit fare is simple and rustic, with loads of flavor. So, Kae made a mushroom quiche, Brandon did a homemade cake, Louis did mashed potatoes seasoned with chili powder, Mags made gougeres (French cheese puffs traditionally served at French wine tastings), and John did a lentil stew. Steve supplied assorted Blue Moon beers, because of course hobbits do love their ale!

Hearty Lentil Stew
Ingredients:
2 cups dried lentils
8 cups water
1 1/2 tbsp. crumbled bacon or bacon bits
2 cups diced ham
1/2 c. chopped onion
1/2 c. chopped celery
1/4 c. chopped carrot
3 tbsp. snipped parsley
1 tbsp snipped cilantro
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. dried leaf oregano
1 can (14.5 ounces) tomatoes
2 tbsp. wine vinegar

Preparation:
Rinse lentils; place in slow cooker. Add 8 cups water and remaining ingredients except tomatoes and vinegar. Cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours. Add tomatoes and vinegar. Turn to HIGH and cook 15 minutes longer, until hot.

Gougeres (French cheese puffs)
From the book Saveur Cooks Authentic French by Saveur Magazine
8 tbsp. butter, cut into pieces
3/4 cup milk
Salt and freshly ground white pepper
1 cup flour
4 eggs, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups grated comté or gruyère cheese

1. Preheat oven to 400°. Combine butter, 1/2 cup milk, and 1/2 cup water in a medium saucepan over high heat. Season generously with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil; when butter has melted, remove pan from heat. Add flour all at once and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until mixture forms a thick dough and pulls away from the sides of the pan, 1–2 minutes. Return pan to heat for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.
2. Let dough cool to room temperature, then beat in eggs, one at a time, making sure each egg is completely incorporated into mixture and dough is smooth after each addition. Dough should be thick, shiny, and smooth. Add 1 cup of the cheese and beat in until well combined.
3. Spoon tablespoon-size mounds of dough on nonstick baking sheets, leaving about 1'' between each. Brush tops with remaining 1/4 cup milk, then sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Working in batches, bake in lower third of oven until doubled in size and golden, 20–25 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.
