A special "ConGlomeration Almost Live" co-production between All Games Considered and Green Ring Ethos, with Mark Kinney, Chris Heim, Carol, and Russ Wallace. Fear The Boot's disqualification from the ENnie Awards (complete statement below). Wisdom of the Gamers: Sorry, you can't come back. Crossovers of video games with tabletop games. Convention survival.
Please note that this episode was recorded before the ENnie Award Presentation at GenCon, and look forward to an AGC Extra coming soon following up on this.
The full text of the statement from Fear The Boot:
Before I begin talking about the issue at hand, I would like to start by thanking Mark and the entire AGC crew for giving us the opportunity to state our side of the story. My comments may get lengthy, so I apologize in advance. However, I feel I can't do justice to this situation without covering the material very carefully.
On Wednesday, July 25th, 2007, we released episode 62 of Fear the Boot. Near the beginning of that episode, we reminded people of the ENnie voting that was in progress and requested their votes.
This comment was followed by a series of ambiguous statements about my brother's actions at Microsoft and several jokes about multiple-IP voting. As of today, I regret these comments.
Our show was founded on irreverent humor. However, this was not an RPG but rather a public voting system that stands or falls on the perceived integrity of the system and its participants. So while we were joking, I fully accept that the jokes were in very poor taste. As the man that edits the show, I take full responsibility for what
was released.
A short time later, we recorded episode 63 and released it on Tuesday, July 31st, 2007. At the beginning of that episode, we took the time to explain our comments in episode 62. We made clear that the comments made about my brother implied a form of cheating that never happened -- something I blame myself for not stating more clearly in 62. We also made it clear that our jokes about cheating were indeed nothing more than jokes and plainly stated that we did not even want a trophy that was won through cheating and did not endorse any form of "gaming the system", so to speak. The analogy I used was that it's like playing a game in "god mode". Sure, you'll get to the end, but there's absolutely no sense of real accomplishment. A trophy won by false measures is not recognition of fan support but rather a piece of metal to clutter my mantle.
Unfortunately, it appears this episode was released a bit too late. I was greeted hours later by a letter from the ENnie board, informing me we had been disqualified from the ENnie nominations. I had the option of either withdrawing myself or being publicly kicked out in a matter of days. Obviously, I had no choice but to withdraw.
At this point, let me pause to admit our guilt of two actions and take full responsibility for them.
1. As I stated before, we made some jokes about cheating. They were only jokes -- and I believe that anyone who follows our podcast would have recognized them as such -- but they were still in poor taste, particularly for a contest that rests on the necessary perception of credibility.
2. I also fully confess that some of the hosts (not all) voted once from both their work and home computers.
However, the accusations that we were guilty of sophisticated forms of cheating are patently false. Even more frustrating, we were given no chance to defend ourselves whatsoever.
We repeatedly asked to see the IP data so we could review it. As computer professionals know, there are many nuances to IP addresses that can give the impression of cheating unless very thoroughly examined.
Knowing they would be hesitant to release their data, we also offered to give them the ranges of IP addresses we have access to so they could see whether we did indeed engage in cheating. This offer was never accepted.
My brother went on to tell them that if any of those IPs were from Microsoft, he would like to report them to the corporate offices to track down the real abuser. The abuse may not have been just a crime against the ENnies, but also a violation of their corporate policies.
This offer was also not accepted.
So what do I take away from all of this?
First, I only admit we were guilty of certain actions. Limited as they may have been, they were still wrong, and I have no one to blame but myself. I apologize deeply to anyone I hurt, whether you are a voter, nominee, or ENnie employee.
Second, I feel very stung by the way we were treated. We were offered no chance to defend ourselves. Furthermore, other nominees have stepped forward to admit they are guilty of the same, limited crimes, yet no actions or investigations have been taken against them. My
mother taught me at a young age that two wrongs don't make a right, so I know that the crimes of others do not in any way excuse my own poor judgment. However, it does lead me to question the fairness of their system.
In the end, we recognize that no matter how you choose to view this situation, we are still part of the same RPG community. We believe in and love the same hobby. I would rather see us unite behind that than divide over this ENnie mess.
To that end, I have asked my community to end discussion of this topic and look to the future instead. We have great plans for the future -- as I know many other podcasts and publishers do -- and I want to look there instead of backward. We, therefore, chose to withdraw from the ENnies, and to remain a non-issue for that competition, we will have
no further interactions with them. We will not submit ourselves for nomination in future years or endorse their contest.
To the listeners as a whole, I apologize again for this whole ordeal. I never set out wanting this sort of a fight with the ENnie board or to see this sort of rift form in the RPG community.
To the ENnie board, I want to offer three positive suggestions for next year's competition that will help avoid situations like this again. And please take these as helpful suggestions, not an attack on the current system.
1. Please publish a clearly codified set of rules on exactly what is and is not acceptable, leaving no question about what podcasts, publishers, and voters can say or do, even in jest.
2. Please publish a clearly codified set of procedures for dispute resolution that gives the accused an opportunity to review the accusation and present evidence of their own before simply dismissing a nominee.
3. Please create a voting process that is more transparent to the public, so real cheating will be obvious to everyone while false accusations can be easily refuted.
Thank you again for taking the time to listen to our explanation of this situation. I will not dodge responsibility for what we truly did wrong, but I also ask that you not judge us wrongly by the things we did not do and have not been allowed to defend ourselves against.
Please have a wonderful day and keep enjoying the hobby that brought us all together in the first place!
Sincerely,
Dan

AGC 55 Part 2 July 21 2007 (Awards Talk II) (35:20)
With Mark Kinney, Chris Heim, Carol, and Mags the Axe. Getting into the ENnie nominations. Chris grouses about not getting nominated. Mark regrets overlooking Qin at GenCon last year. Some other notables. RPG Buffet: Deliria! A little more Deliria commentary. Feedback: A look back at the Wizards/WizKids thing, and a german language gaming podcast is coming! Chris makes an Essen joke. Carol gets a present. Some upcoming reviews.
From the RPG Buffet:
Last month was the RPG Buffet's annual trip to the winery. This month, in honor of Carol's first Deliria game, we held a cookout! The featured entree was Steve's famous Pork Loin with a Maker's Mark Glaze; sides included green beans and pasta salad, and dessert was pound cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.
Maker's Mark Hoisin Pork
1 cup of hickory wood chips
1/3 cup of hoisin sauce
2 Tablespoons seasoned rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons of Maker's Mark
3 Tablespoons of maple syrup
1-½ teaspoons of grated ginger
1-½ teaspoons of lime juice
½ teaspoon of chili paste
½ teaspoon of minced garlic
2(1 pound) pork tenderloins
A teaspoon of salt
½ teaspoon of pepper
Soak 1 cup of hickory wood chips in water for approximately 30 minutes. Set up the grill. "Butterfly" or split the tenderloin at the thickest portion. Salt and pepper the meat. Prepare the rest of the ingredients into a sauce. Add the wood chips to the grill for the smoky flavor. Cook the meat for 5 minutes, basting with the sauce. Cover the grill. Turn and baste for an additional 5 minutes. Continue turning and basting every five minutes until the meat is 155 degrees F, or to the desired doneness. Let the meat sit for 5 minutes. Slice and serve. Enjoy.

AGC 54 June 25 2007 (Star Wars Saga Edition) (57:57)
With Mark Kinney, Chris Heim, Ben Balestra, and Mags The Axe. Mark introduces the show, talks about HyperiCon, and Free RPG Day. Games You May Never Have Heard Of: The Gold Digger Universe Sourcebooks! Chris brings us news of the Magic Pro Tour and Magic Game Day. Ultimate Gamer Test for spots on the Gleemax board. Gaming For Cheap Bastards: It's A Dog's Life! Mark returns to discuss the new Star Wars Saga Edition RPG. RPG Buffet: Elfquest and Wine! The GM Gourmet Podcast. Some feedback talk.
From the RPG Buffet:
Part of the fun of gaming is the chance to hang out with friends, and for this reason the RPG Buffet has an annual road-trip--every June, we all take a day off work and head to an area winery for wine tasting and camaraderie. It's an enjoyable change of pace from our usual pot luck supper, we all enjoy the time off from the office, and it's a great way to get to know members of your group better. And trust us when we tell you: nothing brings a gaming group together like an afternoon spent staggering drunkenly through the pick-your-own-organic-fruit patch, a glass of the local vintage in hand, gathering bushels of strawberries with which to bribe your GM later.
The nice thing about the gaming group road trip is, it's a very flexible concept. No wineries near you? Go catch a ball game, or a movie, or go to an amusement park. Hiking, the beach, caving--you can go anywhere or to any event you and your group feel like. Bring guests along--we've had non-gaming spouses and significant others join us for the winery portion of the day. Scheduling not allowing your group to take a day off and travel? Make reservations at a nice local restaurant and have yourselves a gourmet meal before heading off to game.
If a road-trip isn't practical, you can always have a wine-and-cheese dinner at your game. Here's our recommendations to help you build a menu--you can make your menu as large or small as you like:
- Roquefort goes well with Port
- Gruyere pairs with Sangiovese or Chianti
- Match Cheddar with Shiraz, Cabernet, or Champagne
- Camembert and Brie (especially baked Brie) go well with Cabernet and Champagne
- Camembert also goes very will with Chenin Blanc, and Chevre pairs well with Sauvignon Blanc
- Mozzarella with Zinfandel or a light Chianti
- Cream Cheese and White Zinfandel make a nice pair
- Mix Muenster with Beaujolais
- Colby and Gouda go good with Reisling
- Pair Provolone with Chardonnay.
There really are no firm rules about selecting wines to go with a particular food, including cheese. General guidelines suggest lighter, fruitier wines to accompany mild or young cheeses; fuller-bodied wines with aged cheeses. And, keep in mind that sparkling wines are magnificent with darned near any cheese. You'll find reasonably priced bottles from New York, California, France (Champagne), Spain (Cava) and Italy (Spumante).
A wine and cheese supper needs more than just wine and cheese. You’ll also want to provide lots of flavorful crackers and some crusty, hearty breads (French bread, brushetta, etc.). Add caviar if you're feeling really extravagant--there are some fantastic non-traditional caviars available at a fraction of the cost of the stuff they serve at the Politburo. Fresh, in-season fruit fills out a wine-and-cheese menu very nicely. Considering adding sliced apples (Gala, Golden Delicious, or Fuji), strawberries, grapes, melons, pineapple, peaches, or pears to the menu. Nuts are another popular item for wine-and-cheese suppers--pine nuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts--my favorite is to toast walnuts and serve them warm.
Don’t forget dessert: cheesecake and dark chocolate go very well with wine. And finally, some good quality coffee to keep people from getting too sleepy after all that fantastic food.
Serve cheeses at room temperature (trust us on this, the difference in flavor is enormous). Remove them from the refrigerator and arrange on trays or platters 30 to 60 minutes before you plan to serve. Make sure you've got plates, knives, and napkins for your guests, and that you've pre-cut the harder cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, that sort of thing) into bite-sized chunks so your gamers don't maul them later.

AGC 52 May 26 2007 (Starting a Gaming Group and Other Things) (1:02:15)
With Mark Kinney, Chris Heim, and Carol. A quick correction of something to come in the show. Casting final votes for the AGC Game Tourney. Carol got a new TV, and tried out Mage: The Awakening. Chris got revised Tales From The Wood and It's A Dogs Life. Clarifications and updates on the Shadowrun situation. Chris brings up the new Shadowrun video game and Catan on the XBox 360. Mark is going to HyperiCon. GenCon podcasting track. A weekly show is a future possibility. Gaming For Cheap Bastards: Free RPG Day! Carol remembers White Wolf's Changeling Trailer Contest. Thoughts on starting a new group, which drift into welcoming new players. RPG Buffet: Shadowrun 4th Edition, and comparison with 3rd! Feedback. Word from Polymancer Studios about their actual printed Polymancer magazine. The winner is announced! Going in for the ENnie Awards this year.
In May, the RPG Buffet did a Potato Bar for supper.
Potato Bars are easy and nutritious. One member cooks the potatoes, and everyone else contributes toppings. John, our Shadowrun 3rd ed GM, prepared them in his crockpot thusly:
INGREDIENTS:
* 12 potatoes, more or less
* foil for wrapping potatoes
PREPARATION:
Prick potatoes with fork and wrap each potato in foil. Fill dry crockpot with the wrapped potatoes. Cover and cook on LOW 8 to 10 hours, until potatoes are tender. Prick with a fork to check.
You can put just about anything you like on a baked potato. Below are some suggestions for toppings:
* Assorted shredded meat toppings, such as turkey, chicken, or ham
* Chili, shredded barbeque, or other meaty sauce
* Stroganoff or beef tips
* Bacon bits
* Smoked salmon
* Flaked tuna
* Broccoli, cooked
* Assorted shredded cheeses (cheddar, Monterey Jack, etc.)
* Minced garlic
* Sour cream
* Butter
* Salsa or pico de gallo
* Green onions
* Chives
* Mushrooms, sauteed

From the RPG Buffet:
Also, my Easy Devil's Food Cake Recipe:
INGREDIENTS:
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
3/4 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup chopped pecans
whipped topping or sweetened whipped cream, optional
PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 350°. Heat oil and unsweetened chocolate in an 8-inch square baking pan in oven until chocolate is melted, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add water, sugar, egg, flour, salt, baking soda, and vanilla. Using a fork, beat until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute. Scrape pan with rubber spatula and spread batter evenly in the pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and chopped pecans. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool and serve as is or with whipped topping, if desired.

AGC 44 February 3 2007 (Tribe 8) (1:07:38)
With Mark Kinney, Chris Heim, and Carol. Carol Skypes in with the Zorkian Death Flu. Technical difficulties, yay! Gaming For Cheap Bastards: Ogre Lite! Looking at Fudge or FATE in the future. Tribe 8 world overview. Games You May Never Have Heard Of: Dream Pod 9/Jovian Chronicles! Tribe 8 mechanics. RPG Buffet: All Flesh Must Be Eaten! Chris' big announcement. An aside about The Dresden Files. Pan's Labyrinth.
From Marsha on the RPG Buffet segment:
"Meanwhile, here's the details on the Gamer Ribs with Chimichurri sauce.
Pork ribs are easy to do and very flavorful, so I heartily recommend them for any gaming group looking to have a nice, filling meal. Due to time constraints, I opted to cook the Buffet's pork ribs in my slow-cooker (a.k.s. Crock-Pot [tm]). Slow-cooking is a great option for ribs because the meat is amazingly tender by the end of the cooking time, and of course you can just put them in the slow-cooker on LOW in the morning, and by the time you return home from work eight-to-ten hours later, they're done.
Just rinse the ribs when they come out of the package, salt and pepper them to taste, lay them in the slow-cooker, and turn it on at the LOW setting. Cook for 8-10 hours. If you opt to se your oven instead, slow-roast them for about 75-90 minutes at 375 degrees.
Naturally, pork ribs can be served with your favorite barbeque sauce, or such meat condiments as worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, or wine-and-pepper sauce. But for a really great condiment that a lot of people have never tried, I recommend chimichurri.
Chimichurri is an condiment served with grilled meat in Argentinian cuisine (it can also be used as a marinade for grilled meat). There's literally thousands of different recipes for it, but at it's base chimichurri is olive oil and wine-vinegar based, with fresh herbs such as parsley and oregano, and spices such as paprika and red pepper.
According to Wikipedia, the overall compositions, taste and preparation are derived from Genovese pesto. Chimichurri is very easy to make; the batch I made I prepared right before serving the ribs to the gamers.
I'd tried chimichurri at an Argentinian restaurant here in town, and fell in love with it. I hunted high and low to find a recipe that lookws like it would match what I remember tasting. I found two that came awfully close, so I combined the two recipes posted here as follows:
1 cup (packed) fresh Italian parsley
1/2 cup olive oil
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup (packed) fresh cilantro
2 garlic cloves, peeled
3/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
3 tablespoons fresh oregano, chopped
3 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Sea salt & freshly ground pepper to taste
...into the blender and pureed until smooth. It was a little too sharp for my taste as written, so I added maybe another 1/4 cup olive oil and pureed again.
The result was fantastic. Served in a dish so people could add it to their fresh, hot ribs as desired. The sauce was a hit, and we'll probably have another ribs night again soon.
Please note that I did use all fresh ingredients, and I feel very strongly that it gave the sauce that extra "punch". I'm sure you could substitute dried oregano or parsley, or lemon juice from concentrate, but I doubt you'd get the same effect."

AAC 36 September 17 2006 (Strangeness and Superheros) (58:27)
All Apokolipz Considered, with Ty McGowen and Kris McCuller. Jess is gone this week (go figure). We babble on for a while about newsy type stuff and babble some more about things that just dont matter. Kris wants a cookie throughout the show and now claims he "Gets No Podcasts" (Dvorak wannabe). Ty talks about the broken fridge that we now apparently put "Stuff" into. We both complain that something just doesnt seem right about anything today! Gaming For Cheap Bastards: Marvel RPG now free. Games You May Never Have Heard Of: Junk RPG. We talk a lot of superhero roleplaying games and a little bit about the types of systems used (we dont go into great detail). We hope you liked our edition of All Apokolipz Considered. Kris and Ty Thank you for your time!
(Look for Carol, Mark, and Chris later this week on Gamer: The Podcasting!)

AGC 31 July 8 2006 (Time Travel Bits and Unsupported Games) (61:01)
With Mark Kinney and Chris Heim. Mark trashes most of the episode we recorded because it was crap, so the episode topic (time travel) will return later. (And sorry about the rough nature of the first half of this week's podcast, as Audacity crashed on Mark halfway through editing, and he was really sick of hearing all this over and over.) Mark doesn't want to talk about how the leaving to involve himself in the chupacabra plot went. Green Ring Ethos, and particularly it's discussion of Waverly Hills Sanitorium. No listeners locked in the Bastille that we know of. Origins Awards vs Gamers Choice Awards. Vanguard Awards and Hall of Fame. A short glance at Infinite Armies. Take our survey (but not if you already have)! Games You May Never Have Heard Of: Stalkling The Night Fantastic! Carol's as yet unnamed Gaming Tips: Problem Players! Gaming For Cheap Bastards: Time Lord and Journeys! Games that have dropped out of support.

Show Survey
While I'm waiting for Carol's segments to come in to post a show, I set up a totally unscientific survey to help figure out where to take the show in the future. The link is over in the sidebar to the right. It's only ten questions, so it will hardly take any time at all.
Thanks!
Thanks!
