AGC 84 August 12 2008 (Reviews and Looking Forward to GenCon) (1:11:54)

With Mark Kinney, Carol, and Chris Pipinou. All back in studio at last! But what about the blender? Alcohol stories. What the crew has been up to. The Shocking Review is in: Robotech Shadow Chronicles (which Mark and Chris both talk about)! Carol talks about Eldritch. A disturbing amount of talk about Gnomes takes place. Mark interviews one of the creators, Dan Cross. GenCon talk, Twitter, and Gmail's brief fall. Mark, the Matrix Game Pimp. Good night, folks!

Episode 83 Corrected Promo Links

So, in a bit of a rush to get the episode posted (mostly because of the time-sensitive nature of the ENnies voting) I managed to not change most of the promo links in the show notes. I'll repeat them here, with the correct links.

Heart of the Hunter
The Adventures of Indiana Jim

Playing For Keeps (The one I got right, but you should check it out anyway and buy Mur's book and stuff...)

Thanks to Sam Chupp for catching that!

AGC 83 August 1 2008 (Interview with Bradley McDevitt) (1:02:04)

With Mark Kinney, Ben Balestra, and the RPG Buffet. Scheduling plays havoc again. Podcasts up for awards this year. The end of Gleemax. The creator of Harn passes away, and some musing on game settings. The GenCon podcasting track for this year. Big shocking review will be next episode instead of this one (at least, we hope). The RPG Buffet talks about Toon. Games You May Never Have Heard Of: Chronicles of Ramlar! Interview with Bradley K. McDevitt, creator of Nightlife, It Came From The Late Late Late Show, and Haiiii-Ya!

From Mags:
No recipe for June, since this was the Buffet's annual trip to Huber's Orchard & Winery. However, we invite the audience to check out Forbe's recommendations for twenty-five great wines under $25.00.

New Forums Forthcoming...

It would appear that the old PodcastPEN forums have finally gone away.

It will be a little bit of time, but I plan to set up a solution along the lines of what I set up for the Rolemonkeys a while back. I've got to relearn a few things, but we should have some additional flexibility as well.

We'll be sure to announce both here and on the show when I've got things set up.

Thanks!

AGC 82 July 19 2008 (Return of the RPG Buffet) (53:16)

With Mark Kinney and the RPG Buffet. Mark was on vacation, so the show was late, but he talks a little about a game he played called Liar's Dice. Then the RPG Buffet makes its triumphant return, discussing favorite games played through last year, then their experiment in a short Decipher Star Trek campaign. A little bit of feedback.

From Mags:
There's no recipe for the first segment of this episode, as Louis and I went to Louisville's North End Cafe for supper. However, we can certainly recommend online resources to check local restaurant reviews!

Zagat.com and DineSite.com both focus on high-end, world-class restaurants, so if you're looking for an upscale, classy dining experience, start here.

we8there.com focuses on the service aspect of restaurants. They operate on the belief that if the service sucks, it doesn't matter how good the food tastes. Reviews are submitted by the site's readers. Restaurants.com is a wonderfully comprehensive review site, with diners from all over the world share their dining experiences. And of course, don't forget to check your local newspaper or locally-based websites for reviews--our favorite for the Louisville area is LouisvilleHotbytes.com.

When planning your evening out, be sure to Google the names of the restaurants you're considering, because most wil have web sites with their menus posted (usually with pricing). Call to see if you need reservations, or at the very least call to see what the wait for a table is--you can save yourself a lot of headache that way!

An update to the information about the Decipher version of Star Trek: Decipher was forced to close down their RPG studio due to financial difficulties, and announced supplements for their Star Trek RPG were never published. On November 12, 2007, Decipher CEO Warren Holland confirmed that the company would no longer be releasing any material concerning the Star Trek RPG.

The Star Trek mini-campaign represented a departure from the Buffet's usual approach to RPGs--instead of a new game once a month, we devoted several months to one game. In keeping with this theme of trying something different, this month's featured supper recipe is...breakfast! For a change of pace, we had breakfast for supper one night. Here's two dishes--one a classic Southern breakfast dish, another my personal favorite--that are sure to satisfy your guests:

GARLIC AND CHEESE GRITS

* 6 cups water
* 2 teaspoons salt
* 1 1/2 cups grits
* 1/2 cup butter
* 3 eggs, well beaten
* 16 ounces shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
* 2 to 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
* cayenne pepper to taste
Preparation:
Bring water and salt to a rolling boil; gradually stir in grits with fork. Cook, stirring constantly, until all water is absorbed. Stir in butter a tablespoon at a time; stir in the beaten eggs, working quickly so eggs will not cook before thoroughly blended into the grits, then stir in the shredded cheese, garlic and a little cayenne pepper. Put into a greased 2 1/2-quart casserole. Bake at 350° for 1 hour, until grits feel firm to touch in center (grits will still be soft). Let stand 10 minutes and serve.

Slowcooker Breakfast Cobbler
This recipe is from Table Talk by Mimi Wilson and Mary Beth Lagerborg, authors of Once A Month Cooking.

* 4 medium-sized apples, peeled and sliced
* 1/4 cup honey
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* 2 tablespoons butter, melted
* 2 cups granola cereal
Preparation:
Place apples in slow cooker and mix in remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low 7-9 hours (overnight) or on high 2-3 hours. Serve with milk. (Also goes great over hot biscuits or waffles!)
Yield: 4 servings

Technical Issues Delay AGC 82

My apologies for the further delay of Episode 82, but the home system (on which I'm trying to cobble together the file for AGC 82) is giving me fits. I was also unable to complete the episode over my vacation (editing together segments I had worked fine, but the cabin's acoustics made it impossible to record anything).

I expect to have things ironed out by Monday night, so look for the new episode then!

Update on Episode 82

I am going on vacation with my family this week, a week which would normally be a recording week. As I don't yet know what kind of (or how regular) internet access I shall have, we won't be recording an episode.

However... Thanks to Mags, I now have a backlog of RPG Buffet material, including their overview of favorite games and their six-month run of the Decipher Star Trek RPG. It might end up posting late, but I will definitely take the time this week to put it together (when I'm not busy writing Arcadian Gate and other stories, or, Ghu forbid, actually doing stuff with my family).

So look for AGC 82, The Return of the RPG Buffet, coming soon to a podcatcher near you!

A Notice To Those Concerned

A number of listeners received the original version of Episode 79 and have contacted me with concern.

There is nothing happening at the moment. The comment I made concerned the specific quotation during Episode 78 of a forum thread that, taken out of context, technically constitutes libel on my part, and was largely intended to take any blame on me alone, rather than my co-hosts. This, however, led people to assume some sort of action was taking place, which it is not at this time.

Given that commenting has gotten me in escalating levels of trouble as it is, I'm going to leave it at that.

Re-editing 79

I've become aware that I've once again put my foot in my mouth and said something on episode 79 that might imply things that aren't happening.

I've taken the post down, and I'm going back and re-editing the mp3s. Look for the repost later tonight.

Slight delay on 79

Everyone met up this past Tuesday, but we didn't get any recording done (Carol wanted to see how she got along with the new Chris before we did so). I'm going to have something sometime this week, but with a bunch of other projects (the fiction podcast launching, some other writing I need to do, and the real life job) my time is a little tight at the moment.

My plan is to record something Monday to have ready for release Monday night or Tuesday. I just picked up Demon Hunters as well as the Gumshoe version of the Book of Unremitting Horror, so I expect I'll discuss one of those.

There is also another BashCon Extra from Ben in the queue, so that will probably go out a little after.

Decision: A Vegas After Midnight Story (13:37)

(This is probably the only cross-post you will see from the new fiction podcast. I did it because it's the first story to go out over it, and it is gaming-based. If you like it, feel free to check things out over at mark-kinney.info and come along for the ride.)

Our first story is based on Mick Bradley's Vegas After Midnight game setting, and involves my character's deliberations, after his escape from death at the hands of an outlands warlord, about joining the Rangers.

AGC Game Tourney Statement

The statement text follows:

This is Mark Kinney of the All Games Considered podcast, and this is a statement concerning our recent episode in which we announced the winner of the AGC Game Tourney.

In the course of that episode, during the discussion of the general process of the tourney, I, in addressing some posting in Palladium Books' forums encouraging people to vote more than once per day, singled out a posting that, on second look, not only said they were not exploiting the system, but in fact simply referred to being able to vote once per day, which was legal in the first place. For that, I apologize to Palladium forum poster LostOne. I regret the error.

In addressing the posts that did encourage clearing cookies to vote more than once per day, I, in an attempt to balance out those claims, noted that Palladium has a large and active fan base. I should also have emphasized more those posts denouncing any forms of cheating in the tournament, and do so now. In any event, in a stance consistent with my editorial last August about the Fear The Boot/ENnie Awards situation, I will still seek options for the voting to prevent the question from being a factor in future iterations of the Tourney.

And finally, I deny claims that I wanted Rifts not to win the tournament. I encouraged organization among other game fans not to necessarily stop Rifts, but to drum up participation in general. I have in fact held up the Palladium example several times in the course of the tournament as what I want to see not just out of Palladium fans, but game fans in general, including the Palladium fans.

I cannot speak to the reactions of anyone else on the show, nor will I attempt to stifle those reactions. They had nothing to do with the running of the Tourney outside of assisting in the selection process.

Thank you.

AGCExtra 17 January 30 2008 (RPG Buffet plays Changeling: the Lost) (29:54)

The RPG Buffet talks about Changeling: The Lost, run by Carol.

Chicken Pot Pie is a classic in the comfort food genre. The basic recipe is amazingly versatile, with ultra-easy versions using frozen veggies and canned chicken, and gourmet versions with bechamel sauce or a Parmigiano-Reggiano crust. The RPG Buffet cheated a bit this month because Mags found a fantastic deal on frozen chicken pies from a local organic grocery, but here's her favorite easy Chicken Pot Pie recipe.

Serve it with mashed potatoes and a flavorful green vegetable, like green beans or steamed asparagus. Or, for a tasty variation, stew beef and golden mushroom soup can be substituted in this recipe, as well as turkey left over from the holidays.

INGREDIENTS:

* 2 frozen pie shells
* 1-10 3/4 oz cream of mushroom soup
* 1/2 C. milk
* 1 bag frozen mixed vegetables
* 2 C. cooked chopped chicken
* 1 tsp. minced garlic
* 1 small onion
* Coarse ground black pepper, to taste

PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Take pie shells out of freezer, separate, lay one pie shell flat, leaving the other in the pie pan, and thaw for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, defrost frozen veggies in microwave; chop and sautee onion.

Mix chicken, defrosted veggies, sauteed onion, garlic, soup and milk in large mixing bowl. Pour into pie shell; top with flattened pie shell. Pinch edges together and poke holes in top crust. Bake for about 30-40 minutes or until crusts are done.

AGC 71 January 22 2008 (OGL and Dead Man On Campus) (45:26)

(We had intended to have Mick Bradley do a review of Colonial Gothic, but that didn't end up happening. Apologies for that.)

With Mark Kinney, Chris Heim, and Clay Karwan. Goodbye Bobby Fischer. We're bleeding for the Dresden Files. A look at the AGC Review Queue. The 4th Edition "Open" Game License, and other open gaming musing. Chris reviews Dead Man on Campus, following a segue that makes Mark cringe. Cheap Bastard segment suggestions. Another superhero episode? Gunslinger, a new Doctor Who RPG, and asking about Midnight. A website revamp (and donate buttons for those so inclined). Convention talk.

AGCExtra 14 October 30 2007 (RPG Buffet - Vampire The Requiem) (24:29)

Mags, John, and Layne discuss the RPG Buffet session of Vampire: The Requiem.

Every October the RPG Buffet celebrates the return of cooler weather with a chili supper. In honor of Layne running Vampire: the Requiem for us, Mags made a chili recipe she found on the blog of Justin Achilli. Mr. Achilli, as many White Wolf fans know, was a writer for White Wolf for many years, and was the lead developer for Vampire: the Requiem. Here's his recipe as he presented on his blog:

=====

This recipe will serve eight to 10 people, or six burly dudes who gobble a lot. It's really dense, though, so those four burly dudes will probably lie around a lot afterward.

One to one and one-quarter pounds flank steak
One to one and one-quarter pounds shoulder pork chops
Cooking spray
One and one-half tablespoons olive oil
Two cloves garlic, minced
One large white onion, coarsely chopped
One large green bell pepper, chopped
One Anaheim pepper, chopped
Two Serrano peppers, sliced
One jalapeno pepper, chopped
Four medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped
One cup cheap-ass Cabernet Sauvignon
Four cans (5.5 oz.) low-salt V8 or other vegetable juice
One tbsp. black pepper
One tbsp. cumin
One tbsp. chili powder
Salt to taste (but you'll definitely need some)
The juice of one-half to one lime

Okay, fruity, here's what you do:

Cut the steak into quarter-inch cubes. Yes, you have to do this. I usually put the steak in the freezer for about 15 minutes or so to firm it up in preparation for cutting. Put that aside for a minute, and go to work on your pork chops, cutting that into three-eighths-inch cubes. Yes, you have to do this, too (and you can firm it in the freezer the same way). Now coat a frying pan with the cooking spray and brown the beef. Set that aside, clean and then coat the pan with cooking spray again, and whiten up the pork over medium-high heat. Set that aside, too. I'm an utter carnivore, so I tend toward using the three pounds total of meat, but two will tide you over, believe me.

In a big ol' stock pot, dump in your olive oil and make sure it coats the bottom. Don't use your good, extra-virgin olive oil; just use regular olive oil, because you won't be able to taste it under all the other ingredients. Heat the olive oil to medium-high and toss in the garlic, onion, and all the peppers. Stir it every three minutes, three to five times, until your onions are translucent. Put the top on the stock pot, turn the heat down to medium, and let that mess stew in its own goodness for another five to seven minutes. You will note that your kitchen smells maximum awesome -- this is a good thing. If you're cooking for someone you live with or who will be in the house for a long time while you're preparing this, that person will make some sexy eyes at you because it smells so good. Don't let that person know, but you're just getting started. Once it gets all hissy, toss in your tomatoes, put the top back on, and let the tomatoes soften for about six minutes.

Add the meat, beef first. Let the beef have a minute or two of in-the-pot anger, then add the pork for another two minutes. Stir with a broken-off two-by-four that has a nail in it, a broom handle used to kill a man, or a rowboat oar with which you usually menace people from the side of the road.

Dump in the cheap-ass Cab. Don't get good wine, for the same reason you're not using your good olive oil. I used a five-dollar bottle of wine last time I made this and I had enough left over for beef stew afterward. Also, don't tell anyone you use wine in this recipe. Chili fans think they're all tough shit because they pour beer in their concoctions. While beer certainly has a place in chili, this time the red wine is going to help your steak and pork by bringing out their robust flavors, even underneath all the other crap we're simmering here. Let the pot hiss at you some more, and when the wine's all a-boilin', pour in the vegetable juice. Turn up the heat and bring the
mess to a livid boil.

In go the black pepper, cumin and chili powder, and you'd better stir, fool. Turn the heat down to low, cover the pot, and go screw around for an hour and a half. Return at random times to stir, making sure to break up any tomato remains during those first 45 minutes.

Leave the house and come back. Smell how rad that is? Good work, soldier!

Toward the end of the hour and a half -- say, with 10 minutes or so left, add the salt a little bit at a time until it hits the flavor you want. Don't just dump in a bunch of salt all at once because if you use too much, you can't take it out and all your efforts will have
been for naught. Way to go, dummy.

Right before you serve the chili, add the lime juice, stirring it into the pot of goo.

Optionally, you may wish to top servings with some sharp cheddar cheese, some chopped red onion, and/or some oyster crackers. On the other hand, you can serve it plain with just a sprig of curly parsley for garnish.

If you want hotter chili, leave the jalapeno and Anaheim pepper unseeded -- just pop the seeds in there with the whole mess. Another option is to double the amount of peppers involved (other than the green bell pepper). You can also use a spicy version of the V8, but beware because it's loaded with sodium. You might also want to use a little more black pepper or another clove of garlic. I don't recommend adding more cumin or chili powder because all it takes is one mote too much and they overwhelm the whole affair.

If you want to make this stuff on the cheap -- you can eat on it for a week if you're by yourself -- I recommend substituting ground beef and ground turkey breast instead of the flank steak and pork chops. You're only going to save two or three dollars, though, so you're best off doing the better grade meat. If you're the kind of person who likes beans in his chili**, definitely go with the ground beef and turkey, though. When you turn the heat down after adding the spices, add one 14.5-oz. can of dark kidney beans and one 14.5-oz. can of black beans. The beans will stretch out the life of your chili even longer.

And there you have it. Chili always improves the second day, so if you have a chance to make this in advance and serve it a day after, by all means do it.

This chili is particularly good with Negra Modelo or Shiner Bock. It's also fine with Budweiser (not Bud Light) or my personal favorite, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

* No Superbowl should ever be fouled by the presence of the Carolina Panthers, but since Philly couldn't get its act together, we're cursed to see it happen this year. BOO TO THAT.

** Strictly speaking, chili doesn't have beans. Poor people use beans instead of more good stuff as filler in chili, which actually becomes soup with the beans' addition.

This month the RPG Buffet decided to have one last cookout before the fall weather kicks in. We grilled bratwursts and chicken breasts. Kae, who's learning to gamemaster, is also learning to cook, and she provided us a very tasty version of a classic picnic dish.

EASY POTATO SALAD, from EasySalad Recipes.com

Ingredients:

* Potatoes
* 6 hard boiled eggs
* Mayonnaise
* Orange bell peppers
* Celery

Peel and boil enough potatoes to fill your salad bowl. Rinse cooked potatoes under cold water and let cool. When cooled, put the potatoes back in the pot and chop them into roughly even sized pieces.
Peel and chop 4 of the hard boiled eggs and add them to the pot. Chop the vegatables and add a little at a time until you have an even mix. Add mayo a little at a time while mixing it into the salad.

When you have the right consistency, sample and add salt to taste. For this salad I added a touch of Louisiana hot sauce to give it a little zip.

When ready, transfer salad to your bowl, peel and slice the remaining 2 eggs and place on top of the salad. Garnish with a little paprika if desired and you are ready to eat.

AGC 58 September 1 2007 (GenCon 2007 Part 1) (1:13:00)

With Mark Kinney, Chris Heim, Carol, Clay Karwan, Ben Balestra, Mags The Axe, and Louis. The GenCon Experience! 4th Edition is coming! Fear The Boot presents the ENnies podcasting award, and Dan gives a great speech on podcasting! Ben's GenCon Blurb. Fans? We have fans? The Rolemonkeys and The Game Master Show played Godsend Agenda with Jerry Grayson. The Geeklabel Party. The Paul Tevis Roast. The White Wolf party. Chris got an Official Paul Tevis Cigar Burn. Dancing cages and the people who use them. The After Serenity LARP. Panels and programming. Podcasters, the parties, and the booth. Events we went to, with some location gripes. RPG Buffet: Scion: Hero! Back to GenCon. Demos. Other folks drawn to Indy by the convention crowds. Next time: the stuff we got!

This month, Mags did double-as both GM and head chef, preparing a simple and tasty Chicken and Veggie Lo Mein for the players:

"I call this my Blue Light Special Lo Mein because all of the ingredients came from discount stores. First, I found some food service packages of Soy Ginger Noodles & Sauce from Simply Asia at my local Big Lots. I prepared those according to package directions, then stirred about 2 cups of steamed vegetables from Costco's Kirkland Signature Stir Fry Pack. If you can't find this excellent mix of veggies, you can stir any or all of the following steamed vegetables:

chopped broccoli
sugar snap peas
baby corn
mukamame
baby carrots
chopped mushrooms
sliced water chestnuts
chopped red and yellow bell peppers
chopped green onions

Finally, I took about 2 pounds of chopped boneless skinless chicken thighs, and sauteed them in peanut oil with a couple of tablespoons of garlic, and seasoned with a tablespoon of La Choy Garlic Ginger Stir-Fry Sauce and Marinade, and a couple of dashes of white pepper and ground ginger. I tossed the chicken with the noodles and veggies, and served it to my players with soy sauce.

"John brought along bread, Steve bought plum wine, grenadine, and orange juice to make plum risers, Brandon contributed a variety of pops, and Louis brought Angel Food Cake so we could celebrate John's birthday."
