AGC Going Live for Five!

Longtime listeners will no doubt be aware that All Games Considered is approaching it's five-year anniversary! If you had ever told me it would last this long...

Well, anyway.

We're celebrating with a live show, to run over UStream, on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010, starting at 8pm Eastern time. We expect to do a few reviews, and then reminisce on the last five years, and hope our listeners, past as well as current, will join us! The audio, of course, will go out about a week later.

We're still ironing out a few technical details, so please check back to see what the final process and URL and all will be. In the meantime, if you're a podcaster, we hope you'll play this less-than-30-second promo (it's going out over the feed as well) if you have a show dropping between now and the 18th.

Thank you again, everyone out there -- we couldn't do this without you!

RPG Buffet 7 (Year of D&D Part 3: 2nd Edition AD&D in Greyhawk) (14:51)

With Mags and the RPG Buffet. Mags runs 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons for the RPG Buffet, with an adventure set in Greyhawk.

Here is John's lamb stew recipe:

Ingredients:
1 large onion, chopped (or substitute 2 tablespoons of Hing)
3.5 tablespoons of olive oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
3 pounds boneless lamb for stew, cut into 2" cubes
2 tablespoons sugar
3 cans (14.5 ounces each) beef broth
3 tablespoons tomato paste
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh chopped thyme leaves
1 tablespoon fresh chopped rosemary leaves
2 bay leaves
1 pound carrots, peeled and cut into 2" chunks
1 pound potatoes, cut into 2" chunks
1 package (10 ounces) frozen peas

Cook and stir onion in 1.5 teaspoons olive oil in large skillet over medium heat until clarified. Add to slow cooker. (For those with onion allergies, skip this step).

Mix flour with salt and pepper in large bowl. Dredge lamb in flour mixture. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add lamb. (For those with onion allergies, also add Hing). Cook lamb until browned on all sides. Add sugar. Mix well to coat meat. Cook several more minutes until meat is carmelized. Add to slow cooker.

Add broth to skillet and boil over high heat, scraping sides and bottom of pan to loosen browned bits. Add tomato paste, garlic, thyme, rosemary, and bay leaves. Stir to combine. Pour over meat mixture in slow cooker.

Add potatoes and carrots. Cover. Cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours or HIGH for 3 to 4 hours; or until vegetable and lamb are tender.

Add peas and cook 30 minutes more. Remove and discard bay leave before serving.

and Misty's Venison Stew:

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 pounds venison stew meat
3 onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 bay leaf
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon salt
3 cups water

Cook in pressure cooker for 60 minutes at 15 lbs pressure. Then add:
7 small potatoes, peeled and quartered
1 pound carrots, cut into 1 inch pieces

Cooked at pressure for another 25 minutes.

Finally, combine flour and water. Stir into the stew to thicken. Remove bay leaf before serving.

RPG Buffet 6 (Year of D&D Part 2: 1st Edition AD&D) (15:16)

With Mags and the RPG Buffet. The RPG Buffet returns with a look at 1st edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

Homemade Pizza Crust and Pizza Sauce (serves 8) Takes about an hour to prep, and 20 minutes to cook. (Note: to save time, there are any number or ready-to-bake pizza crusts and jarred pizza sauces available at your local grocery)

Ingredients
DOUGH:
1 (.25 ounce) envelope active dry yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons shortening

SAUCE:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
6 fluid ounces water
1/2 teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Directions
1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
2. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and shortening. Stir in the yeast mixture. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl, and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 45 minutes.
3. Heat oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Saute onion until tender. Stir in tomato paste and water. Season with sugar, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, basil, oregano, marjoram, cumin, chili powder and red pepper flakes. Simmer 15 to 20 minutes.
4. Recipe makes 2 (12 inch) pizzas. Divide dough in half, and spread onto pizza pans. Cover with sauce, and desired toppings. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.

Recommended toppings: Mozzarella Cheese, Diced Ham, Green Olives, Pepperoni, Italian sausage (pre-cooked), Bell peppers (thinly sliced with stems and seeds removed), Mushrooms (thinly sliced), Black olives, Fresh sweet basil (chopped), Fresh tomatoes (chopped)

RPG Buffet 3 (2009 Catch Up Show) (1:05:47)

With Mags and the RPG Buffet. These are the games we missed last year, either due to technical or other issues. Deryni, Monkey Ninja Pirate Robot, Geist: The Sin Eaters, and CthulhuTech.

With Deryni, we did grilled lamb. No special recipe as such, but we did butterfly it! See here.

For Monkey Ninja Pirate Robot, we threw Misty a tea party, because (a) she was the GM, and (b) she loves tea! Assorted finger food were served, but the star of the show was the assortment of teas we prepared.
How to make the perfect cuppa

How to make the perfect cup of green tea

How to make the perfect cup of jasmine tea

Geist was chili night! Here's Mags's White Chili recipe:
1 lb large white beans, soaked overnight in water, drained
6 cups chicken broth
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 medium onions, chopped (divided)
1 Tbsp olive oil
2 4-ounce cans chopped green chilies
2 tsp ground cumin
1 1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
4 cups diced cooked chicken
3 cups grated Monterey Jack cheese
1 jalapeno or serrano pepper, chopped (optional)

1. Combine beans, chicken broth, garlic and half the onions in a large soup pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until beans are very soft, 3 hours or more. Add additional water (or watered-down broth), if necessary.
2. In a skillet, sauté remaining onions in oil until tender. Add chilies and seasonings and mix thoroughly. Add to bean mixture. Add chicken and continue to simmer 1 hour. Check seasoning, add jalapeno or serrano to level of desired hotness.
3. Serve topped with grated cheese. Garnish with cilantro, chopped fresh tomato, salsa, chopped scallions, and/or guacamole. Serve with fresh warmed flour tortillas or tortilla chips.
8-10 servings

Finally, Mags made Quick Beef Stew for Cthulhu Tech:
2 pounds boneless sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
3 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 package McCormick® Beef Stew Seasoning
3 cups water
1 bag (24 ounces) frozen vegetables for stew OR 5 cups cut up vegetables

1. Coat beef with flour. Heat oil in large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add sirloin cubes and sauté until browned. Drain.
2. Add seasoning, water, and vegetables and stir well. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer 15 minutes, or until vegetables are tender.
Makes 8 servings

RPG Buffet 2 (Army of Darkness... with a Twist) (11:46)

With Mags and the RPG Buffet. RPG BUFFET PRESENTS....Frankenhooker, using Army of Darkness rules from Eden Studios! Recorded live at Louisville's newest gaming store, Role of the Die!

We recorded this back in September, and Rebecca joins us for a review. The unusual background noise is the sound of customers entering and leaving Role of the Die, a comic store which kindly acted as host for our September game. No recipe this month, as we decided to have supper at Sitar, a fantastic Indian restaurant just around the corner from RotD.

RPG Buffet 1 (Star Wars Saga Edition) (15:44)

With Mags and the RPG Buffet. We recorded this back in March, and Carol from AGC makes a surprise appearance. The audio isn't fantastic, but our enthusiasm for this excellent RPG shines through.

Beef Fajitas
Via CooksRecipes.com

Marinade:
4 large cloves garlic, finely minced
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1 dash ground oregano
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon kosher or coarse salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steak:
2 pounds skirt steak, trimmed and cut into large pieces to fit on a grill or broiler pan

Vegetables:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 medium assorted colored bell peppers, seeded, membrane removed, sliced thin
1 large red onion, halved and sliced thin
2 large cloves garlic, finely minced
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro (leaves only)
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
Kosher or coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Accompaniment:
1 dozen tortillas, warmed

1. In a large zip-lock style plastic bag, combine garlic, lime juice, cumin, oregano, oil, salt and pepper. Add steak to the marinade, seal bag, removing as much air as possible, and turn to coat well. Marinate for at least 1 hour at room temperature, or overnight in the refrigerator, turning occasionally.

2. Remove steak from marinade and drain well. Grill steak on a well-oiled rack set about 5-inches over glowing coals for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until it is just springy to the touch, for medium-rare meat. (Or steak may be broiled on rack of a broiler pan under a preheated broiler about 4-inches from heat for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side for medium-rare meat.) Transfer steak to a cutting board and let it stand for 10 minutes.

3. While the steak is standing, in a large skillet heat oil over medium-high heat until hot, add bell peppers, onion and garlic; sauté the mixture, stirring, for 5 minutes, or until bell peppers are softened. Remove from heat and stir in the cilantro and lime juice; season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Slice steak thin across the grain on the diagonal and arrange slices on a platter with vegetable mixture. Drizzle any steak juices over entire mixture.

5. Serve with warmed tortillas.

Makes 6 servings. Excellent served with Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, and your favorite tequila!

Stepping up...

I know we've run promos for some of author Tee Morris' work (things like Billibub Baddings and the Case of the Singing Sword, Billibub Baddings and the Case of the Pitcher's Pendant, and Morevi: The Chronicles of Rafe and Askana) at one time or another on AGC. He is also a prolific podcaster, and a big booster of especially the podcast fiction community, and surely people who are seeing this on any of our sites have probably already heard about it elsewhere first. If not, though, I thought I should spread the word here.

As noted over at Phillipa Ballantine's blog, he's had a personal loss recently, leaving him to raise a young daughter alone. She has set up a ChipIn account (the widget is in the blog post linked above) to help out with connected expenses, and gives somewhat more full details there.

If we've somehow helped you to find his work and you've enjoyed his many efforts in writing and podcasting, we hope you'll help a little bit now.

Game Cryer Gift Guide: Mutant City Blues

Find more great holiday gift ideas at the 2009 Game Cryer Gift Guide!

Mutant City Blues by Robin D. Laws, published by Pelgrane Press, 192 pages, $39.95. Book purchased by reviewer (Mark Kinney).

I like a game that scratches multiple itches.

This kind of game can pull flex time, depending on my particular mood, or serve as a gateway from one genre to another. In the case of Pelgrane Press' Mutant City Blues, these are the police procedural and supers genres.

Ten years ago, one percent of humanity developed powers. Since then, society has adjusted around them, with a special police unit formed specifically to deal with these perpetrators, the Heightened Crimes Investigation Unit. This combinaton of "Law and Order" and "CSI" with the postmodern supers style of "Heroes" makes for an interesting mix.

The core of the game is the GUMSHOE system, also created by Robin Laws and first seen in Pelgrane's The Esoterrorists. The system has matured over numerous releases, and this is the first GUMSHOE game not based in some horror setting. This point-based system assumes that characters with the appropriate investigative skills will pick up the clues, insuring that a bad roll won't keep information out of the players' hands. Point spends may reveal even more information, and the players must interpret the data they receive. This game does require preparation, though; a GM approaching this should have an idea of what clues are available in a given scene, and where they're pointing.

The non-investigative skills work similarly, as do powers; these are treated as skills, with point spends added to a d6 roll. Combat does get a little clunky, but everything else runs fairly smooth. A few of these work differently -- Health and (mental) Stability, for example -- but when it comes down to it, the meat of the mechanics are in skills.

Best of all is the highly developed background; ten years of study and people living with these odd powers shows in the setting, complete with forensic details of various power usage and legal ramifications of powers ranging from telepathy to emotion control to self-detonation. Society changed in response to the powers arising, and this game doesn't dodge the issue.

In addition, Mutant City Blues never forgets that it is, at heart, a police procedural, and contains guidance at running a police game, and could easily be used just for that by ditching the powers. At the same time, the home city of the game is kept generic enough to be placed in your group's large city of choice.

The powers are relatively low-key (barring things like self-detonation). There are no time-traveling Hiro Nakamuras or power-aborbing Peter Patrellis in this game; in fact, power development is governed by the Quade Diagram, which shows connections between various powers and limits any multiply-powered characters to some sort of theme. Additionally, certain defects tend to crop up as well, making the life of the Heightened just a little more interesting.

As I've said on the podcast, this is not the game that will take the place of your favorite supers game, if you already have one. What it does instead is give you a terrific investigative engine coupled with legal and forensic considerations of powers, something that almost never comes up in a standard supers story. For me, it's more what I go for when I have that police procedural itch. The super powers are gravy.

A More Intimate Horror: Our Ladies Of Sorrow

Our Ladies of Sorrow, written by Kevin Ross, published by Miskatonic River Press, 2009. www.miskatonicriverpress.com. 152 pages. $34.95 print. Review PDF provided.

Call of Cthulhu is, for good reason, a classic horror RPG, and long the standard by which others are measured. While the concept of investigating the strange and alien backgrounds of the Cthulhu Mythos is classic, on back to Lovecraft's tales and even before, Miskatonic River Press' Our Ladies of Sorrow reminds us it truly is a common element of a lot of horror tales, even the more personal ones presented within. Within the introduction, we see the tropes of such Japanese imports and adaptions as The Ring (Ringu) and The Grudge (Ju-On) set into far more familiar territory, and the Call of Cthulhu mechanics fit them like the layers of slime on a Deep One.

Like these stories, Our Ladies of Sorrow presents a trio of malevolent spirits, often equated with other mythical trios like the Fates, Furies, or Gorgons; we find at their core the Three Sisters, with their focus on the insane, outcast, and mournful. They are also connected to Hecate, or for a full Mythos injection the text even mentions Nyarlathotep, but even this isn't entirely necessary for the story to work, and this series (since, much as the text recommends, this works better interspersed with other stories than run concurrently as a campaign in and of itself) of modern-day horror tales is entirely self contained. Apart from a few possible uses of Mythos knowledge to help move things along in the adventures, the only other solid connection with mainline Call of Cthulhu is some commentary about using these scenarios with Delta Green. With that, we dive into the world of the Three Sisters, wherein we find not just the realm of the supernatural, but touches of our own modern mythologies.

In "House of Shadows," the investigators, in a small college town (left mostly open in the text, but the description of which reminded me very much of Bowling Green, Kentucky, home of my own alma mater -- all it took to fit was changing names and a few other facts), witness the death of an old man in the street. Connecting this to an old woman speaking to him right before the event, clues lead to his home, an old apartment building with a tragic past and an alarming number of "Night Hag" attacks among its population. That which drove the man to death has its grip on others around him, and maybe even an investigator or two before it's over. This scenario not only deals in its own mystery, but sets up the investigators to be pulled into future events.

"Desert of Sighs" places the action firmly in northwestern Arizona, where a group of college students are missing in a stretch of the Mojave Desert known for attracting those seeking spiritual fulfillment, and also for disappearances of those who have entered. Brought to the area to help in the search, the investigators find themselves confronted with the reappearance of the one they went to find, but his friends still lost in the mazes and formations of the Desert of Sighs. With a definite tinge of "otherness" about it, this scenario demands the most pushing by the Keeper to get the group to the meat of the story, but does its best to provide those means from a number of directions.

"River of Tears" takes place in a small river town (the fictional Baleford, Illinois in the text, but any smallish midwestern river town with a sizable Hispanic population will work) haunted by the ghostly child-killer La Llorona. Called in by a contact from a prior scenario, and specifically called out by the ghost itself, the investigators must face this threat to themselves and the children of the town, amid the heightened tension of impending storm and flood.

"The Final Cut" is an epilogue, where the investigators learn more about the background of the Sisters, and come to face a horrific choice.

Each scenario sets the scene, describes the players, and points to an act structure, leaving the Keeper to shape the specifics depending on investigator action and other needs. Connections abound in the adventures, with dreams and events pointing to aspects of future scenarios and the epilogue, and the subsequent scenarios calling back to that old apartment building where the investigators first came to the Sisters' attention. Keepers might struggle a little with the small details, making sure the clues find their way into the investigators' paths, but this allows for the more direct attention the vengeful ghost genre demands, and this series benefits immensely from that kind of careful work.

Additional materials include two new spells, six pages of the handouts expected of a Call of Cthulhu adventure, suggested reading and other media, and a story that inspired (and is mentioned within) this adventure series, Thomas De Quincey's "Levana and Our Ladies of Sorrow."

Our Ladies of Sorrow presents a nice break from the cosmically indifferent entities of more classical tales, and for the Keeper of Arcane Lore looking for something with a slightly different flavor, its intimately creepy series of modern Cthulhu stories is well worth checking out.

Shooting FRED. Need some more Bounty Head Bebop entries. In the future, stuff is coming.
